This ‘sew along’ live card making tutorial is accessed via Zoom on Tuesday 20th January 3pm GMT
Hosted by Sarah (who’ll be sewing along too) you’ll join a small group of participants to create 4 spring flower notecards using freehand machine embroidery, stitching small pieces of fabric directly onto card blanks (appliqué).
This online class is ideally suited to those who have previously viewed Sarah’s Online Masterclass Tutorial or who have experienced a little freehand machine embroidery wishing to progress further with the technique whilst under Sarah’s guidance.
The class is limited to just 8 places so that support is available to all throughout.
Please see below for detailed class information and requirements.
YOU WILL NEED –
Obviously your sewing machine! Please set it up in advance, lower the feed dog and attach an embroidery/darning foot (an open toe foot will give you much better visibility)
- A bobbin wound with white thread
- Set your machine speed (if it has this function) to MEDIUM – You do not have to alter the stitch length
- You could use a 75/11 size needle as it makes a smaller hole in the card but a larger needle is fine to use.
- 4 plain card blanks or pieces of card you can fold (approx 250 gsm in weight) plus envelopes
- An extra piece of card to practise on (we’ll do this together at the start of the class)
- Fabric pieces – please cut these to shape in advance following the recommendations on the list below. Use whatever fabric you’d like ideally with a small print
- A couple of extra irregular shaped fabric pieces to practise
- Sew-all machine thread – choose threads which will really stand out off the fabrics you’re using – if you’re able to use just the one thread colour on ALL your card designs this would be more convenient for you
- A small pair of scissors to trim thread
FABRIC PIECES TO CUT IN ADVANCE (see images for guidance)
Card 1 – Daffodil – cut two contrasting fabrics for the inner parts of the flowers and two slender leaves.
Card 2 – Primrose – 5 petalled flower and small flower bud, two medium identical leaves (TIP cut the leaves on the fold – don’t cut right down to the bottom tip of the leaf – so that you can open it out and have two symmetrical leaves) and 1 small leaf to sit beneath the flower bud
Card 3 – Bluebell – 4 small bell shaped fabric pieces and 2 slender leaves
Card 4 – Snowdrop – 2 identical snowdrop flowers and 2 identical slender leaves
You don’t need to sew all 4 of these flowers, feel free to stick with just the 1 design if you wish!
FOR THESE FLOWER CARDS YOU’LL NEED THE FOLLOWING TOP THREAD COLOURS
Yellow, red/orange, dark blue, green and grey
