This ‘sew along’ live card making tutorial is accessed via Zoom on Thurs 4th Dec 14:00 GMT.
Hosted by Sarah (who’ll be sewing along too) you’ll join a small group of participants to create 4 Christmas cards using freehand machine embroidery, stitching small pieces of fabric directly onto card blanks (appliqué).
This online class is ideally suited to those who have previously viewed Sarah’s Online Masterclass Tutorial or who have experienced a little freehand machine embroidery wishing to progress further with the technique whilst under Sarah’s guidance.
The class is limited to just 10 places so that support is available to all throughout.
Please see below for detailed class information and requirements.
YOU WILL NEED –
Obviously your sewing machine! Please set it up in advance, lower the feed dog and attach an embroidery/darning foot (an open toe foot will give you much better visibility)
- A bobbin wound with white thread
- Set your machine speed (if it has this function) to MEDIUM – You do not have to alter the stitch length
- You could use a 75/11 size needle as it makes a smaller hole in the card but a larger needle is fine to use.
- 4 plain card blanks or pieces of card you can fold (approx 250 gsm in weight) plus envelopes
- An extra piece of card to practise on (we’ll do this together at the start of the class)
- Fabric pieces – please cut these to shape in advance following the recommendations on the list below. Use whatever fabric you’d like (festive or not!) ideally with a small print
- A couple of extra irregular shaped fabric pieces to practise
- Sew-all machine thread – choose threads which will really stand out off the fabrics you’re using – if you’re able to use just the one thread colour on ALL your card designs this would be more convenient for you
- A small pair of scissors to trim thread
FABRIC PIECES TO CUT IN ADVANCE (see image for guidance)
Card 1 – Christmas tree and bauble for the top. Cut the bauble larger than needed so it’s easier for you to hold in place while you sew, you can trim off excess fabric at the end
Card 2 – Wreath shape (cut a circle with a hole cut out of the middle) cut into the edges to make an irregular outline and a little ribbon or twine bow (an alternative would be to cut a bow shape out of fabric)
Card 3 – A large circle in one fabric for the pudding – the ‘cream’ on the top should be in a different fabric with a jagged bottom edge to look like the cream dripping down plus a small holly leaf
Card 4 – Heart shape about 2″- 3″ high and two holly leaves
